THE LIE:
Gray Davis does not deserve to be recalled.
WRONG!
By Robert Colaco, Founder and Volunteer National Chairman of
Citizens For A Better America (R).
Beginning on Monday, October 06, 2003 television
commercials began to hit the airwaves of California
with U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein stating the
following: "This governor was fairly elected. He does
not deserve to be recalled." (1)
I respectfully disagree with U.S. Senator Diane
Feinstein. Governor Gray Davis does need to be
recalled and removed from the office of the Governor of
California.
The no-recall.com website (2), which is dedicated to
defeating the recall, had several links to newspaper
articles that are supporting a No vote on the recall.
In those articles there were repeated statements like
these found in The San Francisco Chronicle, "The
grounds for removal should involve malfeasance, blatant
deception or other abuse of the public trust.
Proponents of this recall have not been able to make
such a case against Gov. Gray Davis." (3) These are the
same claims we seem to have heard the Governor himself
make. The article went on to say: "Instead, the origins
of this recall are plainly ideological." (3)
There is nothing in the state's recall language which
talks about "malfeasance, blatant deception or other
abuse of the public trust" being required grounds for
removal, the standards allow for 'ideological' issues
being enough for a recall, but the origins of this
recall while they include ideological differences go
beyond just ideology.
I find it fascinating that the San Francisco Chronicle
and other media supporting Gray Davis do not talk about
how that idealogical war began, with Governor Gray
Davis himself launching the first salvo, during the
very first "State of the State Address" given in
January of 1999. (4)
In his address Governor Davis made the following
statement, "I will, of course, provide full funding
for family planning programs. And I respectfully
suggest to those who would deny a woman's right to
choose, please don't waste the legislature's time." (4)
This was not some fundraising speech meant to bolster
the party faithful but the State of the State address.
No one in the State Legislature could miss that Gov.
Davis had just said if you do not agree with my
ideaology, you do not have a voice in this new
government. The last time I heard that attitude was in
Iraq before the fall of Saddam Hussein.
Governor Davis went on to say, "No less important to
Californians than their freedom is their sense of
justice and fairness. They've had enough of name-
calling and divisive politics. I believe that voters
responded to my candidacy in part because I wanted to
lower the decibel level in this state. We are after
all, one people, we will rise or fall together." (4)
Again, the words and the tone of the speech by Governor
Gray Davis is similar to the words and the tone I have
heard from Saddam Hussein.
I am familiar with Saddam's style of government because
I was born in Baghdad, Iraq and I came here as a legal
immigrant at the age of 12. The unmitigated gall of
the governor of the largest state in these United
States to tell certain representatives in the State
Legislature to keep their mouths shut. This is really
what Saddam Hussein, or some other 3rd world dictator,
would do. When a new governor is elected in the United
States the opposing party does not give up their free
speech rights at the State Capital door. We have not
sunk that low yet.
Most of the Republican members of the California
legislature that were in office on January 6, 1999,
were Pro-life. Again, with all due respect to Governor
Davis, this was a blatant abuse of the public trust.
The people of California have an expectation that the
governor will hear from all the people. Telling a
large segment of Californians to keep their values to
themselves and to "not waste the legislature's time,"
(4) violated that trust and was also not the way to
start a good relationship with the Republican minority.
Governor Davis would need that Republican minority to
vote on the budget because in California a budget does
not pass without a 67% or 2/3 vote of the legislature.
While the Democrats controlled both the Assembly and
the State Senate they did not, no r do they now control
2/3 of both houses of the legislature.
I must admit, as the Founder and the Volunteer National
Chairman of Citizens For A Better America (R) with the
acronym of CFABA.ORG I have heard many extreme
statements, but I was shocked and offended that Governor
Davis thought it was acceptable to make such a statement.
A statement that beat up on pro-lifers, while at the same
time saying his administration understood that, "No less
important to Californians than their freedom is their
sense of justice and fairness." (4)
Does Gray Davis's concept of "justice and fairness,"
also include ignoring and obstructing the will of the
California voters who voted to pass Proposition 22. An
initiative which simply stated that, "Only marriage
between a man and a women is valid or recognized in
California." This initiative passed here in California
overwhelmingly. "The results of that vote were Yes
votes received 4,618,673 votes representing 61.4% of
the vote. No votes received 2,909,370 votes
representing 38.6% of the vote. Votes Not Cast was
353,956 or 4.5%. California passed Prop. 22 on the
March 7, 2000 ballot." (5) The fact is there were more
votes for Prop. 22 then for Gray Davis himself in
November 2002. Then he only received 3,533,490 votes
or 47.3% of the vote. (6)
In the same arrogant manner that he told Pro-Life
legislators on January 6th, 1999 that their opinions
and their thoughts, were not welcome by him, Governor
Gray Davis has arrogantly defied the will of the people
of California. In a 2003 Associated Press article
entitled, "Davis signs law giving domestic partners
most marriage rights," he said, "I am strongly
committed to extending human rights and equal rights to
everyone. A family is a family not because of gender
but because of values, like commitment, trust and
love," Davis said before he put pen to paper Friday
night amid cheers and applause from the standing-room
only crowd at San Francisco's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual
and Transgender center. (7)
Governor Gray Davis is acting on the notion that only
the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community
should have human rights and equal rights, not the
61.4% of Californians that voted to have marriage be
between a man and a woman. Gray Davis only wants human
rights and equal rights to those that believe that
abortion ought to be allowed in any and all
circumstances. Yet he and his friends in the media
continue to tell Californians that we that support the
recall "are plainly ideological ."
Governor Davis's massive expansion of domestic partner
rights combined with his new medical insurance
requirements for small businesses with 25 or more
employees takes this way out of just ideology and into
the realm of direct financial imp act on businesses in
California. This is just one example of how, what
Governor Davis calls, just ideological differences
translates into a direct impact on the state's economy.
Yet legislators who oppose his value system must keep
their mouths shut and their ideas out of the floor of
the legislature.
With all due respect to the governor, the Democrats
that have voted with him in the legislature, as well as
his friends in the media, they should take the log out
of their own eyes before they worry about the splinter
in our eyes.
