C O M M E N T A R Y!

By Robert Colaco, National Chairman of Citizens For A Better America ® with national headquarters in Van Nuys, California.

What happened in the November 3, 1998 election?

Some people have said and the allegations were made that the Republican candidates were “too conservative”. The fact of the matter was that they were not.

Citizens For A Better America ® endorsed only five candidates nationwide for this election. Of the five (5) candidates that we endorsed, in four states, one was already an officeholder and he won his seat by 242 votes out of the 10,812 that were cast. We were thrilled to fax out our News Release announcing Republican State Representative Mark Moses’s endorsement for the 42nd district of Hawaii. Representative Moses has been dubbed the “most conservative person in Hawaii.” He won re-election because he had the guts to correctly answer our Candidate Questionnaire that showed that he is a Pro America first, pro traditional family, pro life, pro 2nd amendment, pro USA sovereignty, pro constitutional candidate. He was not afraid to be associated with and support the YES on traditional marriage ballot measure in Hawaii which also won in his state.

What about California? We have been involved in elections in California since our founding on October 15, 1992, but for the first time in Citizens For A Better America’s™ history, we were not able to endorse a single Republican candidate in California. Why is that? There was not a single Republican candidate who answered all of the questions on our Candidate Questionnaire correctly. Not a single Republican candidate who was a Pro America first, pro traditional family, pro life, pro 2nd amendment, pro USA sovereignty, pro constitutional candidate.

However, we were thrilled on May 8, 1998, to be the first group to endorse Diane Beall Templin, candidate for Attorney General running on the American Independent Party (AIP) of California’s ticket. AIP is the California affiliate of the U.S. Taxpayers party. She in fact was the only candidate receiving our endorsement for any office in California, for the general election. Templin was the only California candidate who was a Pro America first, pro traditional family, pro life, pro 2nd amendment, pro USA sovereignty, pro constitutional candidate.

We were absolutely thrilled that she received 2.4% of the vote (as of 11/11/98) while the rest of her colleagues in the American Independent Party (AIP) received from 0.4% of the vote to 1.4%, with most of them being around 1.1%. Going over 2% meant that the AIP could keep their ballot status. Diane Templin had a 77% higher vote count than anyone else in her party. We are proud of Diane Templin’s efforts, of the tough positions she took and of the effort she made in getting votes. We are also excited to have played a part in that 77% increase in her vote count, and that we had a part in encouraging those extra 80,125 more people who voted for her that did not vote for anyone else in her political party.

What really happened in California? The Democrats were not apologetic in their beliefs. They told Californians that they wanted to make sure that women had a right to choose an abortion. Yet, Dan Lungren when asked about it apologized for what he could or could not do about abortion and Matt Fong said that he supported abortion through the first trimester. Neither one raised the subject of partial birth abortion. Then when the Democrats attacked, Republican candidates about their gun stands, not a single one of them fought back with why they believed the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, was critical to preserve the very freedoms that we have in America.

I must really hand it to the Democrats and their leadership from President Clinton on down, they knew where their support came from and they made sure to keep that support clearly in their camp.

On the other hand the Republican Party leadership was confused about where their support came from and did nothing to make sure to keep that support clearly stayed in their camp.

We at Citizens For A Better America ® are not confused about what the voters want. They want, Pro America first, pro traditional family, pro life, pro 2nd amendment, pro USA sovereignty, pro constitutional candidates. We continue to encourage those kinds of candidates to run for office.
